What happens in counselling?

What to Expect in Your First Counselling Session

Embarking on your first counselling journey can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Here's what you can expect:

A Warm Welcome: Your therapist will greet you warmly and create a safe, non-judgmental space for you to share your thoughts and feelings.

Getting to Know You: Your counsellor will ask about your goals, concerns, and what led you to seek counselling. It's a chance for them to understand your unique situation.

Confidentiality:  Know that everything you discuss will remain confidential within legal limits. Trust is the foundation of counselling.

Active Listening: Your therapist will actively listen, offering empathy and support. They'll guide you in exploring your thoughts and emotions.

Collaborative Approach: Counselling is a partnership. You and your therapist will work together to set goals and explore strategies for positive change.

No Rush: There's no pressure to divulge everything in the first session. Go at your own pace; your therapist is there to support your progress.

Homework or Strategies: Depending on your goals, your counsellor may suggest strategies or homework to practice between sessions.

Open Feedback:  Feel free to ask questions and voice any concerns. Your therapist is there to help and clarify.

Remember, counselling is a process, and your first session is just the beginning. Over time, it can lead to personal growth, enhanced well-being, and a better understanding of yourself.

Did you know?

Our therapists may offer an initial "getting to know you" session, so that you can see if you're a good fit.
